I know this post is long overdue but having a chance to reflect more is great in retrospect. This year's National Championship was very different for me. I went into it not thinking, "it'd be cool to be on the podium, or I have an outside chance." I went into it with plans to be there. This mindset leading up really made a difference for me. We approached each week leading up more so as practice then just training. Replicating what would be happening on the platform: Rest times, jumps, etc. Nothing would be a surprise that day. If we hit lifts a spot on the podium was there. When it comes to the Snatch I always feel this is where I excel. Confidence was soaring going into it. We had a great warm-up and smoked the Opener at 104. We moved up to 107kg. Had to wait 11 lifts out due to a few misses, took an extra Power Snatch in the back before and came out and smoked 107kg. This wound up being a gold medal lift. We came out to take 110kg (not knowing that I had won) and lost it behind. The bar looped a bit back as I didn't get the knees back far enough. Overall, I was extremely happy with the performance and put me in a great mindset for the Clean and Jerk. We got pushed into a quick warm-up for the Clean and Jerk with the goal to open up above 125kg as there has been a hold up through the last few years. We came out and smoked 126kg. Feeling confident, we went up to 130kg and hit that pretty solid. Coming out for my final lift of 133kg, I had to double bounce out of the Clean but still had plenty of legs. I had the jerk overhead but didn't lock down the core and wound up dropping it. The 130kg was good enough for a Bronze in the Clean and Jerk and it set my up for Silver Overall. Overall 107/130/237 landed me a Silver Medal. I was really happy with the performance and am pretty excited for what's to come in 2018 and 2019 with the new weight classes. Jon Walka
